Mexican Government Honors Mayor Gordon

Kiss of death

There’s not even a Wikipedia page for the Ohtli Award and it’s hard to find much else to figure out exactly what it’s about.  But Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon just won it and from reading the coverage in the Arizona Republic, it is the Mexican government’s highest honor for a civilian living outside its borders.  Oh, and Ohtli is the Aztec word for ‘pathway’.

The Ohtli Award is the Mexican government’s highest honor for a civilian living outside of Mexico who helped “enhance the standard of living for Mexicans living abroad,” according to the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix.

The Mexican Consulate references his leadership in forging economic ties and promoting regional prosperity.  Although opposing SB 1070 probably helped him gain favor with the Mexican government as well.

Kudos to Gordon.  But this sounds more like a kiss of death for an Arizona politician.
