The New (Post-Tucson) Civility

It’s over

Remember how the left blamed inflammatory right wing rhetoric for the massacre in Tucson? Conservatives, who used words like ‘Nazi’ and ‘target,’ were inflaming unstable citizens like Jared Loughner, pushing them over the ledge.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) joined the liberal refrain, telling reporters, “Part of that has to be what they’re hearing on the airwaves,” Calling the FCC to clamp down on violent rhetoric, she declared, “Some things I’ve heard would at least call for a reprimand. Don’t do that.”

Three months later, the left doesn’t seem to give a fig about civility in the battle of the budget. Referring to the more conservative (read “responsible”) freshman class, Rep. Slaughter told reporters, “This is probably one of the worst times we’ve seen because the numbers of people elected to Congress. I went through this as co-chair of the arts caucus…In ’94 people were elected simply to come here to kill the National Endowment for the Arts. Now they’re here to kill women.”
